Salt Painting

Raised Salt Painting!

Need an awesome art activity to do with your kiddos?  Salt painting is a winner!  My daughter had made salt paintings at school before, but we had never made them at home.  If you haven't salt painted yet, it's super fun and EASY!  Check out our tutorial below...

First things first, gather all your materials.

You will need:
- Cardstock or watercolor paper - honestly just something sturdy
- Squeeze bottle glue (if you have any left over after the slime craze....)
- Watercolors - the little trays or liquid watercolors
- Paintbrushes
- Salt
I like to put down and art tablecloth and put the paper on a cookie sheet so when the salt part comes in there isn't a huge mess.  We are pretty messy when it comes to art at our house.  Don't forget to keep paper towels nearby as well!

How to make a Raised Salt Painting:

Step 1:  Squeeze the bottle glue onto the paper.  My 9 year old was able to do this on her own, but my little guy needed some help.  A great opportunity to practice fine motor skills with squeezing the glue bottle and all, but we weren't looking for salty glue mountain - so we squeezed the bottle together.

Step 2: Sprinkle salt all over the glue. I gave my kiddos little bowls of salt, but you could use shakers as well.

Step 3: Shake the extra salt off the paper - this is where you will be happy to have that cookie sheet underneath!

Step 4: Paint!  This can be a tad bit tricky with little ones.  First dip your paint brush in the water, then the paint, then just tap the salt.  The paint will spread in all directions around the paintbrush.   The tricky part is that you are not actually painting with brushstrokes, it is more of a light tap.  You could always use little pipettes or droppers if that's easier for your little one.

Step 5: Let it dry - this can take a few days depending on how much glue was used.

So if you haven't tried salt painting yet - you should totally try it!  We had a blast today and it kept my 4 year old entertained and focused for about an hour!
